US Individual Tax Returns Form 1040 for US citizens, green card holders and expats

US citizens and green card holders are taxed on their worldwide income wherever they live, including in Pakistan and the Gulf. We prepare Form 1040 returns, claim the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion or foreign tax credits so you are not taxed twice, and file the FBAR and FATCA reports that often matter more than the tax itself.

US individual returns

Living abroad does not end US filing

The United States taxes its citizens and green card holders on worldwide income, even if they have lived in Pakistan or the UAE for years. The good news is that exclusions and credits often reduce the US tax to little or nothing. The risk is in not filing, and in missing the foreign account reports.

US citizens and lawful permanent residents file Form 1040 reporting income from all sources. The return is due on 15 April, with an automatic two-month extension to 15 June for those living abroad, and a further extension to 15 October available by filing Form 4868. Interest runs on any tax not paid by 15 April. Income earned abroad can be excluded up to an annual limit using the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion on Form 2555, along with a housing exclusion, or tax paid to the foreign country can be credited against US tax using Form 1116.

Foreign account and asset reporting is separate from income tax. Anyone with foreign financial accounts whose combined value exceeded $10,000 at any time in the year must file an FBAR, FinCEN Form 114, which is due 15 April with an automatic extension to 15 October. Form 8938 under FATCA applies to specified foreign financial assets above higher thresholds. Penalties for missing these forms can be severe, even when no tax is due, though streamlined procedures exist for people who did not know they had to file.

For clients with ties to Pakistan, we coordinate the US return with the Pakistani position. Pakistani bank accounts, property and investments are reported in the FBAR and Form 8938 where required, Pakistani tax paid is used for foreign tax credits, and the US–Pakistan double tax treaty is considered. We also prepare the Pakistani return and wealth statement where needed, so both countries receive consistent information.

Non-resident aliens with US income file a different return; see US non-resident tax services. State returns are covered by US state tax filing, and planning by US tax planning and advisory.

For most Americans living in Pakistan, the risk is not the tax bill. It is the FBAR and Form 8938 nobody told them about.
