Individual returns

Tax deducted from your salary is not the same as filing your return

Your employer deducts income tax from your salary every month under section 149, but that does not file your return. If your taxable income is above the threshold, or you want to be on the Active Taxpayers List, you still need to file a return and a wealth statement each year.

An individual return reports income from every source: salary, pension, rent, bank profit, capital gains on property or shares, freelance earnings and foreign income. Alongside it, the wealth statement under section 116 lists your assets and liabilities, including those of a spouse and minor children who do not file themselves, and explains how your net assets changed during the year.

Being a filer matters in daily life. Filers pay lower withholding tax on bank profit, property and vehicle transactions, and since the Finance Act, 2025, section 114C restricts certain large purchases and transactions for people who are not eligible persons. If you have never filed, we start with your income tax registration and take you through to your first return.

For most salaried people, filing properly means claiming back tax they have already paid, not paying more.

Risks we prevent

Common mistakes in individual tax returns

These are the issues we see most often when individuals file on their own.

01

Assuming salary tax is enough

Employer deductions under section 149 do not cover rent, bank profit, property gains or foreign income.

We review every source of income.
02

Family assets in the wrong place

A non-filer spouse's or child's assets left out of the section 116 wealth statement break the reconciliation.

We map family assets correctly.
03

Undocumented gifts

Gifts, inheritances and loans from family without records can be treated as unexplained income under section 111.

We document every source of funds.
04

Assets at the wrong value

Property and vehicles recorded inconsistently from year to year cause wealth reconciliation gaps later.

We keep asset values consistent.
05

Foreign assets not declared

Resident individuals must report foreign income and assets, and FBR increasingly receives information from abroad.

We confirm your residency status first.
06

Staying a non-filer

Not being on the Active Taxpayers List means higher withholding tax and restrictions on major transactions.

We get you filed and listed.

FAQs

Individual tax return questions we hear most

Have a question that is not here? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.

Do salaried people need to file a tax return in Pakistan?
Yes, if your taxable income is above the threshold, even though your employer deducts tax from your salary. Filing also puts you on the Active Taxpayers List, which lowers withholding tax on many transactions. Your employer's deduction does not file a return or a wealth statement on your behalf.
What documents do I need to file my return?
Usually your CNIC, salary certificate, bank profit and withholding certificates, and documents for any property, vehicles or investments you own or bought during the year. If you have rent, pension, freelance or foreign income, we need records of those too. We send a short checklist tailored to you.
Do I need to declare my spouse's assets?
If your spouse does not file their own return, their assets are generally included in your wealth statement under section 116, as are those of your minor children. If your spouse files separately, each wealth statement should be consistent with the other. We prepare family returns together for this reason.
I am an overseas Pakistani. Should I file a return?
It depends on your residency status and your income in Pakistan. Non-residents are generally taxed only on Pakistan-source income, such as rent or bank profit, but filing can still lower withholding tax on property and banking transactions. We confirm your status and coordinate with your obligations abroad through our international tax team.
How do I become a filer for the first time?
You register on FBR's IRIS portal, where your CNIC serves as your NTN, then file your return and wealth statement. Once filed, you appear on the Active Taxpayers List. We handle the registration and your first return together.
Can I get a refund of excess tax deducted?
Often, yes. If tax deducted from your salary, bank profit or other payments is more than your actual liability, the excess can be claimed as a refund through your return and a refund application under section 170. We check whether a refund is due before filing.
Can you file returns for previous years?
Yes. We prepare and file overdue returns, reconcile the wealth statements across the missing years and advise on any penalties or surcharges involved. Bringing old years up to date is often the first step to getting back on the Active Taxpayers List.
How much does individual tax return filing cost?
Most individual returns are a fixed fee that depends on your income sources and the assets in your wealth statement. Your first consultation is free and you receive the quote before any work starts.
