Audit representation

Audits go better when one person speaks for the business

In a tax audit, different staff answering different auditors with different numbers is a common route to adverse findings. Appointing one authorised representative to manage requests, review documents before they are handed over and attend meetings brings order to the process.

FBR can select taxpayers for income tax audit under section 177 or section 214C of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, and for sales tax audit under section 72B of the Sales Tax Act, 1990, with powers to call for records under section 176 of the Ordinance and section 25 of the Act. Withholding audits examine compliance as a withholding agent, and federal excise audits look at production, removals and, in some sectors, track-and-trace data. Provincial revenue authorities audit sales tax on services under their own laws.

As your representative, we review each notice, agree a practical timetable with the auditors, prepare and index the records requested, check them for consistency across taxes before they are submitted, attend audit meetings and reply to findings in writing. Where findings lead to a show-cause notice, we continue into the assessment stage through our tax assessment representation service.

A typical engagement starts with a short planning meeting with your finance team. We agree who holds which records, how requests will reach us and who signs off each submission. From then on, every request from every auditor is logged with its date and deadline, and nothing leaves the business without our review. That discipline is what keeps parallel audits from producing conflicting answers.

For detail on each audit type, see income tax audit and sales tax audit. If your company also needs its financial statements audited, that is a separate engagement; see statutory audit. Before an audit begins, a tax health check can show where the questions are likely to fall.

We review every document before the auditors see it. Not to hide anything, but so that every figure you hand over can be explained.

FAQs

Tax audit representation questions we hear most

Have a question that is not here? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.

What is tax audit representation?
It means appointing an authorised representative to manage a tax audit on your behalf: handling notices and requests, preparing records, attending meetings and replying to findings.
Can FBR audit income tax and sales tax at the same time?
Yes. Income tax audits under section 177 or 214C and sales tax audits under section 72B can run in parallel, often using the same records. Managing them together keeps your answers consistent.
Do I have to give the auditors everything they ask for?
You should respond to lawful requests, but records should be reviewed and organised first. We submit what is requested, indexed and reconciled, and ask for clarification where a request is unclear.
What is a withholding audit?
It examines whether you deducted and deposited tax correctly as a withholding agent. Shortfalls can be recovered from you under section 161. See withholding tax compliance.
Is a tax audit the same as a statutory audit?
No. A tax audit is FBR's examination of your tax affairs. A statutory audit is an independent audit of financial statements under the Companies Act, 2017.
What happens after the audit?
The audit either closes or leads to a show-cause notice proposing tax. We reply and, if an order follows, advise on appeal. See tax assessment representation.
Do you handle provincial audits?
We coordinate provincial sales tax on services audits by PRA, SRB, KPRA or BRA where they run alongside FBR audits of the same business.
How much does audit representation cost?
We charge a fixed fee per audit, or a combined fee for linked audits, based on scope and records. Your first consultation is free.
