Responding to FBR

A notice is the start of a process, and your first reply shapes how it ends

An FBR notice usually means the department holds information that does not match your return, or that you have not filed at all. Your reply becomes part of the record, so it has to be accurate, complete, supported by documents and sent before the deadline.

Income tax notices arrive through IRIS, by email or by post. The most common ones ask you to file a return under section 114(4) or a wealth statement under section 116, request information under section 176, propose an amended assessment under section 122(9) or select your case for audit under section 177. Withholding agents can also receive notices under sections 161 and 205 for tax that should have been deducted or deposited.

Our replies are prepared by the team that understands the numbers, reviewed by an LLB-qualified advocate and filed by an FBR-registered income tax practitioner who can represent you before the department. If the matter ends in an order you disagree with, the same team takes it forward through income tax appeals. Sales tax notices are covered on our sales tax notice response page.

The most damaging response to an FBR notice is no response. The second most damaging is a rushed one.

We identify the section, the issue and the deadline, and explain what the notice means in plain language.

A reasoned request for more time, filed before the deadline when you need it.

Hearings and representation

Attendance before the officer by an FBR-registered income tax practitioner.

Orders and next steps

If an order is passed, advice on rectification, appeal or payment.

Risks we prevent

How notice replies usually go wrong

Most poor outcomes we see came from how the notice was handled, not from the original issue.

01

Missing the deadline

Without a reply, the officer can decide on the information available, including a best judgment assessment under section 121.

We act on the notice the day it arrives.
02

Answering more than was asked

Volunteering unrelated information can widen the scope of an inquiry well beyond the original question.

We answer the question precisely.
03

Claims without evidence

Statements unsupported by bank records, agreements or reconciliations are easy for the officer to reject.

Every point we make is documented.
04

The wrong kind of reply

A section 122(9) show cause notice needs a very different response from a section 176 information request.

We tailor the reply to the section.
05

Paying a demand you do not owe

A demand under section 137 can be challenged, but the deadlines to appeal are short.

We review every demand before you pay.
06

Letting it reach recovery

Unpaid, unchallenged demands can lead to recovery action under section 138, including attachment of bank accounts.

We keep the matter under control.
How we work

How we handle your notice

Send a photo or PDF of the notice on WhatsApp. We will tell you the same day what it means and what happens next.

Same day

Review

We confirm the section, the issue and the deadline, and tell you what we need from you.

Before work starts

Quote

A fixed fee for the reply, or a written scope for an audit or hearing.

Evidence

Gather and reconcile

We collect documents and reconcile your records against FBR's data.

Approval

Draft and approve

You review the reply. Nothing is submitted without your approval.

Follow-through

File and represent

We submit, attend hearings and track the matter until it is closed.

Who we work with

Notice support for individuals and businesses

Individuals with a first notice

Salaried people and filers facing a section 114 or 116 notice for the first time.

Overseas Pakistanis

Notices about property, rent or bank profit in Pakistan while you live abroad.

Business owners

Notices questioning turnover, expenses or the match with your bank records.

Companies and withholding agents

Section 161 and 205 notices on tax deducted or deposited.

Property buyers and sellers

Questions about the source of funds or values declared for property.

Freelancers

Notices about foreign remittances and income reported from abroad.

Why Finvocates

Notice replies backed by both the numbers and the law

Tax notices rarely stay in one box. A late return affects your status, which affects withholding on a property deal, which leads to a notice. We handle every part of that chain.

Accountants and an advocate together

Chartered accountants build the figures and an LLB-qualified advocate reviews the legal position.

Authorised representation

An FBR-registered income tax practitioner can appear before the department on your behalf.

Same-day priority

Active notices are prioritised the same day, by phone and WhatsApp, around the clock.

Plain-language advice

You will understand what the notice says, what we recommend and why.

Records already organised

If we keep your books, the evidence for your reply is already in order.

Appeals if needed

If an order goes against you, the same team handles the appeal.

FAQs

FBR notice questions we hear most

Have a question that is not here? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.

What should I do when I receive an FBR notice?
Do not ignore it and do not reply in a hurry. Note the deadline, keep a copy of the notice and send it to a qualified adviser. A reply that is incomplete or contradicts your return can make the matter harder to resolve. We review notices the same day they are sent to us.
How long do I have to reply?
The deadline is stated in the notice itself. If you need more time to collect documents, a reasoned request for adjournment can be filed before the deadline, although granting it is at the officer's discretion. Asking after the deadline has passed is much weaker.
What does a notice under section 114(4) mean?
It means FBR believes you were required to file an income tax return for a tax year and did not. You usually resolve it by filing the return and wealth statement, or by explaining with evidence why you were not required to file. We prepare both the return and the reply.
What is a section 122(9) show cause notice?
It is a notice proposing to amend your assessment, for example by adding income or disallowing expenses, and it gives you the chance to explain before an order is passed. This is often the best stage to resolve a matter, so the reply should address every point with evidence.
My case was selected for audit under section 177. What now?
An audit is a detailed review of your records for one or more tax years. You will receive requests for documents and may need to attend meetings. We organise your records, prepare the responses and attend on your behalf. See our income tax audit page for more detail.
Can you represent me before FBR?
Yes. Our FBR-registered income tax practitioner can act as your authorised representative before the department, and our LLB-qualified advocate handles matters that need legal representation. You may not need to attend hearings yourself.
What if an order has already been passed against me?
You can usually appeal to the Commissioner (Appeals) within 30 days of being served with the order or notice of demand, and some obvious mistakes can be corrected through rectification under section 221. Time matters, so contact us as soon as you receive the order.
How much does an FBR notice reply cost?
It depends on the notice and the work involved. Straightforward notices, such as a request to file a return, are usually a fixed fee. Audits and contested matters are quoted on a written scope. Your first consultation is free.
