What return filing involves

Your return is a statement FBR will compare against everything else it knows about you

An income tax return is not just a form. FBR matches it against withholding statements, bank data, property and vehicle records, and the returns of the people you do business with. A return that does not reconcile is the most common reason a notice arrives.

Returns are filed under section 114 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 through FBR's IRIS portal. Individuals also file a wealth statement under section 116, reconciling last year's net assets with this year's through income, expenses and gifts. Under section 118, the return is due by 30 September for individuals and AOPs and by 31 December for most companies, unless FBR extends the date.

Filing on time keeps you on the Active Taxpayers List, which means lower withholding tax on banking, property and vehicle transactions. Since the Finance Act, 2025, section 114C also restricts certain large transactions for people who are not eligible persons, which makes an accurate, timely return more important than ever. Choose the right return for you: individual and salaried, business or company returns.

Most FBR notices we answer started with a return that was filed quickly but never reconciled.

Risks we prevent

Where income tax returns usually go wrong

These are the issues we fix most often for people who filed on their own or with a rushed adviser.

01

Wealth that does not reconcile

A gap between declared income and the growth in your assets is what triggers section 122 amendments and section 111 additions.

We reconcile wealth before you file.
02

Missed withholding credits

Tax already deducted from salary, bank profit or utility bills is often left unclaimed, so you effectively pay twice.

We match credits to FBR records.
03

Late filing

Missing the section 118 due date brings a penalty under section 182 and can keep you off the Active Taxpayers List.

We file ahead of the deadline.
04

Income left out

Rent, foreign income or a property sale left off the return surfaces later through FBR's third-party data.

We review every income source.
05

Not an eligible person

People who do not meet the section 114C conditions face restrictions on certain large property, vehicle and financial transactions.

We keep your filings in order.
06

Copying last year's return

Rolling over old figures without checking each year's Finance Act produces wrong tax and wrong credits.

We apply the current year's law.

FAQs

Income tax return questions we hear most

Have a question that is not here? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.

When is the income tax return deadline in Pakistan?
Under section 118 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, returns for the tax year ending 30 June are due by 30 September for individuals and AOPs and by 31 December for most companies. Companies with a special tax year follow a different date. FBR sometimes extends deadlines by notification, so we confirm the current date each year.
Who is required to file an income tax return?
Every company and AOP must file, as must every individual whose taxable income is above the taxable threshold. Some people must file regardless of income, for example owners of certain property or vehicles and people registered for sales tax. We check whether the law requires you to file, and filing is often worthwhile even when it is optional.
What is a wealth statement?
A wealth statement under section 116 lists an individual's assets and liabilities at the end of the tax year, including those of a spouse and minor children who do not file themselves, and reconciles the change from the previous year. It must agree with your declared income and expenses, so we prepare it alongside your return.
What happens if I file my return late?
Late filing attracts a penalty under section 182 and can keep you off the Active Taxpayers List, which means higher withholding tax on many transactions. In some cases a late filer can be added to the list by paying a surcharge. Filing late is almost always better than not filing, and we can bring overdue years up to date.
Can I revise a return after filing it?
Yes, in many cases. Section 114(6) allows a revised return to correct an omission or wrong statement, subject to conditions in the law, and some revisions need the Commissioner's approval. We review the original return and tell you whether a revision is the right fix.
What is the Active Taxpayers List?
The Active Taxpayers List (ATL) is FBR's list of people and businesses who have filed their returns. Being on it means lower withholding tax on transactions such as bank profit, property purchases and vehicle registration. FBR issues the annual list each March, and filing on time is what keeps you on it.
Which return do I need: individual, business or company?
Salaried people and individuals with personal income file an individual return. Sole proprietors and self-employed professionals file an individual return that includes business income. AOPs and companies file their own returns, covered on our company return page.
How much does income tax return filing cost?
Fees depend on your income sources, the wealth statement reconciliation needed and how many years you need to file. Your first consultation is free, and you receive a fixed quote before any work starts.
