What sales tax compliance means

Sales tax is a monthly discipline, not a once-a-year filing

Every month, a sales tax registered business in Pakistan has to issue valid tax invoices, declare every sale, claim only the input tax the law allows, pay on time and file a return that agrees with its suppliers' and buyers' returns.

Goods are taxed federally under the Sales Tax Act, 1990 and administered by FBR. Services are taxed separately: in Islamabad under the ICT (Tax on Services) Ordinance, 2001 through FBR, and in the provinces by PRA, SRB, KPRA and BRA. Many businesses deal with more than one of these at once.

Our sales tax compliance service covers all of it. One team keeps your books, prepares your sales tax returns and reconciles them with your income tax and withholding filings, so the figures agree wherever FBR looks.

Most sales tax problems we fix were not caused by a big mistake. They built up quietly from small monthly mismatches nobody was reconciling.
What's included

Everything your monthly sales tax compliance needs

Take the full package as a monthly retainer, or pick the parts you need alongside your in-house accountant.

Monthly return filing

Preparation and e-filing of your sales tax return on IRIS, including nil returns, with the acknowledgement sent to you.

Annexure reconciliation

Your sales (Annex-C) and purchase records matched against your books and FBR's data before anything is submitted.

Input tax protection

Supplier mismatches, missing invoices, banking-channel issues and section 8B limits flagged early, so the input tax you claim holds up.

FBR digital invoicing

Support with electronic invoicing integration, invoice data checks and coordination with your software provider or licensed integrator.

Sales tax on services

Compliance for services in Islamabad and with PRA, SRB, KPRA or BRA, including businesses registered in more than one jurisdiction.

Sales tax withholding

Correct treatment when you withhold sales tax as an agent, or when your customers withhold it from you, so credits are not lost.

Records & tax invoices

Invoice formats, debit and credit notes and the records the law requires, set up so they stand up to an FBR audit.

Notices & audit support

If FBR or a provincial authority issues a notice, the team that prepared your returns prepares the reply, with an LLB-qualified advocate on hand.

Risks we prevent

Where sales tax compliance usually goes wrong

These are the problems we see most often when a business comes to us for the first time. Each one is cheaper to prevent than to fix.

01

Input tax disallowed

If a supplier does not declare the sale in its own return, your input tax can be refused under section 8(1)(ca).

We check supplier data before you claim.
02

Cash payments to suppliers

Paying suppliers outside the banking channel above the limit in section 73 can cost you the input tax on that purchase.

We review payment trails every month.
03

Late payment or filing

Missing the 15th or the 18th brings default surcharge under section 34 and penalties under section 33.

We build buffers ahead of every deadline.
04

Suspended registration

Non-filing or unexplained mismatches can lead to suspension or blacklisting under section 21, which also blocks your buyers' input claims.

We keep you active and respond fast.
05

Off the Active Taxpayers List

Missed returns can drop you from the sales tax ATL, and customers increasingly check it before they buy from you.

We file every period, including nil returns.
06

Invoices FBR cannot see

Registered persons are required to integrate with FBR digital invoicing. Non-integration carries penalties and action on the registration.

We help you integrate and stay integrated.

FAQs

Sales tax compliance questions we hear most

Have a question that is not here? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.

What does sales tax compliance include?
It covers everything a registered person must do each month: issuing valid tax invoices, reporting sales through FBR digital invoicing, reconciling sales and purchase annexures, working out the input tax you can claim, paying the tax and e-filing the return. It also includes keeping the records you need if FBR or a provincial authority audits you.
When are sales tax returns due in Pakistan?
Under the standard monthly procedure, sales tax is paid by the 15th and the return is e-filed on IRIS by the 18th of the month following the tax period. Some sectors follow special procedures, and FBR sometimes extends dates, so we confirm the exact calendar for your business.
Do I need to file a return if I had no sales this month?
Yes. While you are registered, a return is required for every tax period, even when there is no activity. Missing nil returns is one of the most common reasons businesses drop off the Active Taxpayers List.
Why was my input tax disallowed?
The usual causes are a supplier who did not declare the sale or is not active, payments above the banking-channel limit made in cash, invoices missing required details, or the adjustment limit under section 8B. Monthly reconciliation catches most of these before you file. If input tax has already been disallowed, see our sales tax notice response service.
Is FBR digital invoicing mandatory for my business?
FBR has made electronic invoicing integration a requirement for sales tax registered persons under the Sales Tax Rules, 2006, with deadlines phased by category. Not integrating can lead to penalties and action on your registration. We check which notification applies to you and work with your software provider or licensed integrator.
I provide services in Islamabad. Do I file with FBR or a provincial authority?
Services provided in Islamabad Capital Territory are taxed under the ICT (Tax on Services) Ordinance, 2001 and administered by FBR. Services in the provinces fall under PRA, SRB, KPRA or BRA. If you serve clients in more than one province, you may need more than one registration, and we can manage all of them.
Can you fix returns filed incorrectly by a previous accountant?
Yes. We review past returns, identify mismatches and missed claims, and correct what the law allows. We then take over the monthly filing so the problem does not repeat.
How much does sales tax compliance cost?
Fees depend on your invoice volume, the number of registrations and how much cleanup is needed. Your first consultation is free, and you receive a written quote before any work starts, with no hidden charges.
