Monthly sales tax returns

A sales tax return has two halves, and both must match other people's returns

Every monthly return under section 26 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990 has two sides: output tax on your sales and input tax on your purchases. Both are checked against the returns of your customers and suppliers, so a return that looks right on its own can still fail.

On IRIS, sales are reported in Annexure-C and purchases in Annexure-A, with further annexures for imports, withholding and adjustments where they apply. Under FBR's standard procedure, the sales annexure is submitted by the 10th, tax is paid through a PSID by the 15th and the return is e-filed by the 18th of the following month. Input tax is generally allowed only where your supplier has declared the same sale, so timing and matching matter every month.

This service covers the return itself: preparing the annexures, checking input claims, working out the payable or carried-forward amount, paying and filing. If you want us to manage everything around it as well, including invoicing and FBR digital invoicing, see our sales tax compliance service, or our sales tax reconciliation service to fix past periods.

We have seen businesses lose input tax for months simply because a supplier filed late. Checking before you file is the only fix.

Risks we prevent

Where monthly sales tax returns usually go wrong

Small monthly errors add up quickly. These are the ones we catch most often.

01

Supplier mismatches

Input tax claimed on purchases your supplier never declared can be disallowed under section 8(1)(ca).

We match purchases before you claim.
02

Late sales annexure

Uploading Annexure-C late leaves your customers' input tax unmatched and strains relationships.

We upload sales data on time.
03

Paying after the 15th

Late payment brings default surcharge under section 34, even when the return is filed by the 18th.

We prepare the PSID early.
04

Skipping nil returns

No sales does not mean no return. Missed periods can lead to suspension under section 21.

We file every period.
05

Import tax not claimed

Sales tax paid at the port can be lost as input tax if it is not claimed within the time allowed.

We capture every goods declaration.
06

Errors carried forward

Mistakes repeated month after month grow into larger exposures when an audit arrives.

We review each return fresh.

FAQs

Sales tax return questions we hear most

Have a question that is not here? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.

When is the sales tax return due in Pakistan?
Under FBR's standard monthly procedure, the sales annexure is submitted by the 10th, sales tax is paid by the 15th and the return is e-filed on IRIS by the 18th of the month following the tax period. Some sectors follow special procedures and FBR sometimes extends dates, so we confirm your calendar.
What are Annexure-C and Annexure-A?
Annexure-C is where you report your sales, so your customers can see and claim the input tax on what they bought from you. Annexure-A is where your purchases and input tax claims appear. FBR matches both annexures against the returns of your customers and suppliers.
Do I need to file a sales tax return if I had no sales?
Yes. While you are registered, a return is due for every tax period, even when there is no activity. Missing nil returns can lead to suspension of your registration and removal from the sales tax Active Taxpayers List.
What if my supplier has not filed their return?
Input tax on a purchase is generally not allowed until the supplier has declared the sale in their own return, under section 8(1)(ca) of the Sales Tax Act, 1990. We flag unmatched purchases before you file and help you follow up with suppliers so the input tax can be claimed.
Can I correct a sales tax return after filing it?
In limited circumstances, yes. The law allows certain corrections and revised returns, some of which need the Commissioner's approval, and the right route depends on the type of error. We review the mistake and advise on the correct way to fix it.
What happens if I pay sales tax late?
Late payment attracts default surcharge under section 34 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990, and late filing can bring penalties under section 33. Repeated defaults can also affect your registration status. We prepare payments early to avoid this.
What is the difference between sales tax return filing and sales tax compliance?
Return filing covers preparing, paying and filing the monthly return. Our sales tax compliance service covers that plus everything around it: invoice formats, digital invoicing integration, records, withholding treatment and notice support.
How much does monthly sales tax return filing cost?
Fees are usually a fixed monthly amount based on your invoice volume and the annexures involved. Your first consultation is free, and you receive a written quote before any work starts.
