Tax consultancy

A tax adviser who already knows your business

Every time a business asks a new adviser a tax question, it pays for them to learn the facts again. A consultancy retainer avoids that. We learn your structure, contracts, suppliers, customers and filing history once, and then answer questions quickly and in context.

Tax consultancy is ongoing support rather than a single piece of advice. Under a monthly retainer, we answer day-to-day questions on income tax, sales tax, withholding and federal excise, review your compliance calendar, check that deposits and returns are made on time, brief you on each Finance Act and important SROs and circulars, and act as the first point of contact when a notice or letter arrives from FBR or a provincial authority.

The retainer is designed around the questions businesses actually ask: should we deduct tax on this payment, can we claim input tax on that purchase, how should this contract be worded, what happens if we open a branch in another province, and what does this IRIS message mean. Where a question becomes a project, such as a formal opinion, an appeal or a restructuring, we quote it separately, so the retainer stays predictable.

Onboarding is where the value of a retainer is built. In the first month we review your registrations with FBR and any provincial authority, your last returns and statements, your main contracts and your supplier and customer profile. We then set up a compliance calendar for every tax you are liable to, flag any gaps or risks we find, and agree with you how questions will reach us and who on your side signs off decisions. From then on, each question is answered against that background, and each quarterly review updates it as your business changes.

Tax consultancy differs from tax advisory, which gives written opinions on individual questions for a fixed fee each. Many clients combine the retainer with our income tax compliance and monthly accounting services, so the same team keeps the books, files the returns and answers the questions.

The best tax advice is usually the advice given before a decision, by someone who already knows the business. A retainer makes that possible.

FAQs

Tax consultancy questions we hear most

Have a question that is not here? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.

What is tax consultancy?
Tax consultancy is ongoing tax support on a retainer. A consultant who knows your business answers questions as they arise, tracks your compliance and acts as the first contact for tax authority matters.
How is tax consultancy different from tax advisory?
Consultancy is a monthly retainer for ongoing support. Tax advisory gives a written opinion on a specific question, priced per question.
What does the monthly fee cover?
Day-to-day questions, compliance calendar tracking, monthly checks, quarterly reviews, budget briefings, contract tax reviews and first response to notices. Larger projects are quoted separately.
Does the retainer include filing my returns?
Filing can be added. Many clients combine consultancy with income tax, sales tax and withholding compliance so one team handles everything.
Can you advise on provincial sales tax on services?
Yes. We advise on federal taxes and provincial sales tax on services under PRA, SRB, KPRA and BRA laws.
How quickly do you answer questions?
Quick questions are answered as they come in, by phone, email or WhatsApp. Questions that need research or a written answer are scheduled with you, with a date agreed at the outset.
Is there a minimum term?
We agree the term and notice period in the engagement letter. Retainers work best over a full tax year, so we can cover the budget and the filing season.
How much does tax consultancy cost?
We charge a fixed monthly fee based on the size and complexity of your business. Your first consultation is free.
