UK Income Tax Returns for employees, high earners, investors and new arrivals

Being taxed through PAYE does not always mean your UK income tax is settled. High earners, people with savings, dividends or foreign income, and anyone claiming reliefs often need to file a return or correct their tax code. We review your position, prepare your UK income tax return, claim what you are owed and make sure HMRC has the right picture.

UK income tax returns

PAYE gets most people most of the way, but not always all of it

The personal allowance of £12,570 is frozen, so more employees are moving into higher bands each year. With that come extra rules, such as the personal allowance taper and the High Income Child Benefit Charge, that PAYE alone does not always handle correctly.

Employees whose tax is fully collected through PAYE often do not need a return. But a return, or at least a review of the tax code, is usually needed if your adjusted net income exceeds £100,000, because the personal allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 above that level and disappears entirely at £125,140; if you or your partner receive Child Benefit and your income exceeds £60,000, triggering the High Income Child Benefit Charge, which is tapered to £80,000; if you have dividends, savings interest or other income above the relevant allowances; or if you want to claim higher-rate relief on pension contributions or Gift Aid donations.

Residence and foreign income need particular care. Whether you are UK resident is decided by the Statutory Residence Test, which looks at days spent in the UK and your ties to the UK. UK residents are taxed on worldwide income and gains. From 6 April 2025, the remittance basis for non-domiciled individuals was replaced by a residence-based system, under which people arriving in the UK after ten years of non-residence can claim relief on foreign income and gains for their first four years of residence. For people moving between Pakistan and the UK, the double tax treaty and foreign tax credit relief also matter.

We start with your P60, P11D, bank and investment statements and any foreign income records, calculate your liability, compare it with what PAYE has collected and explain the difference. Where tax has been overpaid, we claim the refund. Where it has been underpaid, we file the return and, where possible, arrange for the balance to be collected through your tax code to spread the cost.

For self-employment and property income, see UK Self Assessment. Gains on shares or property are covered by UK capital gains tax, and people living outside the UK should see UK non-resident tax services.

Many of the returns we prepare for employees end in a refund or a corrected tax code. The rest avoid a penalty.

FAQs

UK income tax return questions we hear most

Have a question that is not here? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.

Do I need to file a tax return if I am employed?
Not always. You may need to file if your income exceeds £100,000, you pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge, you have untaxed income above the allowances, or you have foreign income.
What happens to my personal allowance above £100,000?
It is reduced by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income above £100,000 and lost entirely at £125,140, creating a high effective tax rate in that band.
What is the High Income Child Benefit Charge?
A charge on the higher earner in a household receiving Child Benefit when adjusted net income exceeds £60,000. It increases until it equals the full benefit at £80,000.
How do I claim higher-rate pension tax relief?
Relief at the basic rate is added automatically to personal pension contributions, but higher and additional-rate relief is usually claimed through a tax return or by contacting HMRC.
How is UK residence decided?
By the Statutory Residence Test, which looks at the days you spend in the UK and your ties to the UK, such as home, work and family.
What is the four-year FIG regime?
From 6 April 2025, individuals becoming UK resident after ten years of non-residence can claim relief on foreign income and gains for their first four years of UK residence.
Can I get a tax refund?
Yes, if PAYE has collected too much, for example because of an incorrect tax code or unclaimed reliefs. We claim refunds through the return or directly.
How much does a UK income tax return cost?
We charge a fixed fee per return based on your income sources. Your first consultation is free.
