HMRC registration
Registration and UTR obtained.
If you are self-employed, let property, are a partner in a firm or have income HMRC cannot tax at source, you need to file a Self Assessment return. We register you with HMRC, prepare your SA100 and supplementary pages, calculate your tax and payments on account, and file online before the 31 January deadline. We also prepare you for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.
HMRC's Self Assessment system still revolves around the 31 January online deadline. But from 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000 must also keep digital records and send quarterly updates under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, with lower thresholds to follow.
You generally need to file a Self Assessment return if you are self-employed as a sole trader, a partner in a business partnership, a landlord receiving rental income, or if you have untaxed income such as foreign income, significant savings or investment income, or capital gains that need reporting. New taxpayers must register with HMRC by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which the obligation arose. The online return, form SA100 with supplementary pages such as SA103 for self-employment and SA105 for property, is due by 31 January following the end of the tax year, together with any balancing payment.
If your tax bill is above HMRC's limits, you also make payments on account towards the next year, due on 31 January and 31 July, each usually half of the previous year's liability. Late filing brings an initial £100 penalty, with further penalties the longer the return is outstanding, and late payment brings interest and surcharges. We calculate payments on account carefully and apply to reduce them where income has fallen.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies from 6 April 2026 to sole traders and landlords whose qualifying income from self-employment and property exceeds £50,000, falling to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. They must keep digital records, submit quarterly updates through compatible software and make a final declaration after the year end. We assess whether you are in scope, help choose software and prepare the quarterly updates.
