UK tax with HMRC

UK tax is changing fast, and Pakistan links make it more complex

Whether you live in the UK, own property there from Pakistan or run a UK company, HMRC expects accurate returns on its own timetable. If you also have income, property or family in Pakistan, both countries' rules need to work together.

Individuals report income and gains through Self Assessment, with online returns due by 31 January after the tax year ends on 5 April. From 6 April 2026, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax requires sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000 to keep digital records and send quarterly updates, with the threshold falling to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. Companies file corporation tax returns on form CT600, VAT-registered businesses file VAT returns under Making Tax Digital, and employers run PAYE through real-time reporting.

Non-residents are not outside the system. Rental income from UK property, gains on UK property and UK-source income can all need reporting, and the Pakistan–UK tax treaty and foreign tax credits help prevent double taxation when both sides are filed consistently. Our UK work is coordinated with our Pakistan tax team and the rest of our international tax practice.

We often meet landlords and overseas Pakistanis who did not realise HMRC expected anything from them. Getting compliant is usually simpler than they fear.
Common mistakes

Where UK tax usually goes wrong

These are the issues we see most often with UK clients who have links to Pakistan.

01

Late Self Assessment

Missing 31 January triggers an automatic penalty, with more added the longer the return stays unfiled.

We file well before the deadline.
02

Not ready for MTD

From April 2026, landlords and sole traders above £50,000 of qualifying income need digital records and quarterly updates.

We set up MTD-ready records.
03

Overseas landlords off the radar

Non-residents with UK rental income still have reporting obligations and may face tax deducted at source.

We register and file for you.
04

Property sales not reported

Many UK property disposals must be reported to HMRC within 60 days, separately from your annual return.

We report disposals on time.
05

Double taxation

Income taxed in both the UK and Pakistan when treaty relief and foreign tax credits are not claimed.

We coordinate both returns.
06

Company deadlines missed

Corporation tax payment and CT600 filing dates run on different timetables, and both carry penalties.

We diarise every company date.

FAQs

UK tax questions we hear most

Have a question that is not here? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.

When is the UK Self Assessment deadline?
For online returns, the deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year on 5 April, which is also when any balancing payment is due. Paper returns are due by 31 October. Late filing triggers automatic penalties.
What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
It is HMRC's move to digital record-keeping and quarterly updates for sole traders and landlords. It applies from 6 April 2026 to those with qualifying income above £50,000, from April 2027 above £30,000 and from April 2028 above £20,000. We set up compliant records and file the updates for you.
I live in Pakistan and rent out a UK property. Do I need to file in the UK?
Usually, yes. Non-resident landlords generally need to report UK rental income to HMRC, and tax may be deducted by your letting agent or tenant unless HMRC approves otherwise. We handle the registration and returns and coordinate with your Pakistan position.
Do I have to report the sale of a UK property?
Many disposals of UK residential property, and all disposals of UK property by non-residents, must be reported to HMRC within 60 days of completion, with any tax paid in the same window. This is separate from your annual return. See our UK capital gains tax service.
Can income be taxed in both the UK and Pakistan?
It can be, unless relief is claimed. The Pakistan–UK tax treaty and foreign tax credit rules are designed to prevent double taxation, but they only work when both returns are prepared consistently. Our international tax team handles both sides.
Do you file corporation tax returns for UK companies?
Yes. We prepare and file CT600 corporation tax returns and the related accounts information for UK limited companies, and can also handle VAT and payroll. See our UK corporation tax returns page.
Can you work with me if I am not in the UK?
Yes. Most of our UK clients work with us entirely remotely, from the UK, Pakistan or elsewhere, by email, phone, WhatsApp and shared documents.
How much do your UK tax services cost?
Fees depend on the returns needed and the complexity of your income and assets. Your first consultation is free and you receive a written quote before any work starts.
