Registration review
Which registrations you need and by when.
Starting to trade, letting a property, forming a company or hiring staff in the UK each creates a registration with HMRC, and each has its own deadline. We register individuals and businesses for Self Assessment, corporation tax, VAT and PAYE, including non-residents and Pakistan-based owners, so you start compliant and avoid late registration penalties.
HMRC registrations are triggered by events: the first day of self-employment, a company starting to trade, turnover passing the VAT threshold, the first employee. Each comes with a deadline, and missing it often means penalties as well as backdated tax.
Individuals who become self-employed, start letting property or have other untaxed income must register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which the income arose, and receive a Unique Taxpayer Reference. A new limited company must register for corporation tax within three months of starting to do business, which is often earlier than people expect, since buying goods, advertising or hiring can all count as starting. Companies House incorporation alone does not complete HMRC registration.
VAT registration is required when taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling twelve-month period, with the application due within 30 days of the end of the month in which the threshold was passed, or immediately if you expect to exceed it in the next 30 days. Businesses below the threshold can register voluntarily to recover VAT on costs. Non-established businesses making taxable supplies in the UK may need to register regardless of turnover. Employers must register for PAYE before the first payday and then report payroll in real time.
Non-residents need particular care. Landlords living outside the UK, including in Pakistan, fall under the Non-Resident Landlord Scheme, and can apply to receive rent without basic rate tax being deducted if their tax affairs are up to date. Overseas companies trading in the UK may need to register a UK establishment or account for corporation tax on UK profits. We identify every registration you need from the start and file them in the right order. For each registration we confirm the correct start date, because registering from the wrong date can either create penalties or leave tax unpaid, and we set up your HMRC online accounts so you can see your records.
After registration, our Self Assessment, corporation tax, VAT and PAYE services take over. Non-residents should also see UK non-resident tax services.
