VAT registration
Mandatory, voluntary and overseas sellers.
UK VAT affects pricing, cash flow and compliance for every business above the £90,000 threshold, and for many below it. We handle UK VAT registration, Making Tax Digital returns, scheme choices such as the Flat Rate and Cash Accounting schemes, and VAT on cross-border sales, for UK businesses and overseas sellers alike.
Whether a supply is standard-rated, reduced, zero-rated or exempt, which VAT scheme you use and when you register all affect what customers pay and how much cash you hold. Getting UK VAT right is as much about business decisions as about filing returns.
UK businesses must register for VAT when taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling twelve-month period, or is expected to in the next 30 days. Businesses below the threshold can register voluntarily, which can be worthwhile where customers are VAT-registered or costs carry significant VAT. Overseas businesses with no UK establishment that make taxable supplies in the UK generally have no threshold and must register from their first supply. Supplies are standard-rated at 20%, reduced-rated at 5%, zero-rated or exempt, and the correct treatment depends on the goods or services and the customer.
All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file returns through Making Tax Digital compatible software. Returns are usually quarterly, due one month and seven days after the end of the period, with payment due at the same time. Late returns accrue points under the penalty regime, leading to fixed penalties once the threshold is reached, and late payments bring penalties and interest. Schemes such as Cash Accounting, Annual Accounting and the Flat Rate Scheme can simplify VAT or help cash flow for eligible businesses, but are not always cheaper. Before each return is filed, we reconcile output and input VAT to the ledger, check large or unusual items and compare the return with previous periods, so errors are caught before HMRC sees them.
Cross-border transactions need particular care. Services sold to overseas business customers are often outside the scope of UK VAT, imports may use postponed VAT accounting, and goods sold online to UK consumers by overseas sellers have specific rules. For businesses with Pakistani connections, such as IT service exporters selling to UK clients, we confirm whether UK VAT applies and how invoices should be worded.
VAT returns are prepared from your books, so bookkeeping and accounting system setup help. Registration is covered by UK tax registration, and wider obligations by UK tax compliance.
