UAE tax with the FTA

The UAE is no longer a no-tax jurisdiction for businesses

Since corporate tax arrived under Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022, almost every UAE business has a registration and filing obligation, even if it owes no tax. Alongside VAT, that means two sets of returns, deadlines and records to keep in order with the Federal Tax Authority.

UAE corporate tax is charged at 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above that, with separate rules for qualifying free zone persons and other special regimes. Businesses generally need to register through the FTA's EmaraTax portal and file a return for each tax period, and eligible resident businesses with revenue up to AED 3 million have been able to elect Small Business Relief for tax periods ending by 31 December 2026. VAT is charged at 5%, with mandatory registration once taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 and voluntary registration available from AED 187,500.

For Pakistani founders and companies, UAE tax also connects to home. Profits, salaries and dividends that flow between the two countries need to be reported consistently, and the Pakistan–UAE tax treaty can help when both sides are handled together. Our UAE work is coordinated with our Pakistan tax and business advisory teams.

Many small UAE businesses assume corporate tax does not apply to them because they owe nothing. Registration and filing usually still do.
Common mistakes

Where UAE tax usually goes wrong

These are the issues we see most often with small and growing UAE businesses.

01

Not registering for corporate tax

Most businesses must register even if profits are below AED 375,000, and late registration attracts penalties.

We register you on EmaraTax.
02

Missing Small Business Relief

Eligible businesses with revenue up to AED 3 million must elect the relief, and it has a time limit.

We check your eligibility.
03

Free zone status assumed

The qualifying free zone person rules have conditions; not every free zone company pays 0%.

We test your free zone position.
04

VAT registration left too late

Crossing the AED 375,000 mandatory threshold without registering creates back-dated liabilities.

We monitor your turnover.
05

Weak VAT records

Invoices and records that do not meet FTA requirements make input VAT claims and audits harder.

We set up compliant records.
06

UAE and Pakistan out of step

Dividends, salaries and transfers reported differently in each country invite questions on both sides.

We coordinate both filings.

FAQs

UAE tax questions we hear most

Have a question that is not here? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.

What is the UAE corporate tax rate?
Under Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022, corporate tax is 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% above that. Qualifying free zone persons and some other categories have separate rules. Most businesses must register and file even when no tax is due.
Does my business need to register for UAE corporate tax if it makes a loss?
In most cases, yes. Registration and filing obligations generally apply regardless of whether the business is profitable, and losses may be carried forward if properly reported. We register you and file your returns on EmaraTax.
What is Small Business Relief?
Small Business Relief allows eligible resident businesses with revenue up to AED 3 million to be treated as having no taxable income for a tax period, if they elect for it. It has been available for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026, and conditions apply. We check whether you qualify.
When do I need to register for UAE VAT?
Registration is mandatory when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months, or are expected to in the next 30 days. Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500 of taxable supplies, imports or expenses. See our UAE VAT registration service.
What is EmaraTax?
EmaraTax is the Federal Tax Authority's online platform for UAE tax registrations, returns, payments and correspondence, covering both corporate tax and VAT. We manage your filings on it for you.
Are free zone companies exempt from corporate tax?
Not automatically. A free zone company can benefit from 0% on qualifying income only if it meets the conditions to be a qualifying free zone person, and other income is taxed at 9%. We review your activities and income to confirm your position.
I run a UAE business and have income in Pakistan. How is that handled?
Your UAE filings and your Pakistan tax position need to be consistent, and the Pakistan–UAE tax treaty can help prevent double taxation. Our international and Pakistan tax teams coordinate both sides.
How much do your UAE tax services cost?
Fees depend on the registrations and returns needed and your transaction volume. Your first consultation is free and you receive a written quote before any work starts.
