Most UK penalties come from deadlines, not tax

HMRC and Companies House penalties are often triggered not by underpaid tax but by late filings: a VAT return a few days late, a confirmation statement missed, accounts filed after the deadline. A single compliance calendar, managed by one team, removes most of that risk.

A UK limited company typically has monthly PAYE submissions and payments if it employs anyone, including directors; quarterly VAT returns under Making Tax Digital if registered; annual accounts at Companies House, normally within nine months of the year end for a private company; an annual confirmation statement; and a corporation tax payment and CT600 return. Directors and shareholders often have their own Self Assessment returns. Self-employed individuals and landlords have Self Assessment, payments on account and, from April 2026 for many, quarterly Making Tax Digital updates.

Records must be kept for the periods the law requires, generally six years for companies and at least five years after the 31 January filing deadline for individuals in business. Companies House is also introducing identity verification for directors and persons with significant control, and changes to company details must be filed promptly. Each of these obligations is straightforward on its own; the risk lies in managing them all together, across HMRC and Companies House, while the figures stay consistent.

Our compliance service maps every obligation for your business, builds a calendar, prepares and files each return and filing, and reconciles them to your accounts so that VAT, payroll, corporation tax and Self Assessment figures agree. For overseas owners, including those in Pakistan and the UAE, we provide a single point of contact so the UK side runs without you needing to deal directly with HMRC.

In the first month we review your existing registrations and recent filings, confirm the deadlines for each, and set up access to your HMRC and Companies House accounts. We then agree how and when you will send us records, such as bank statements, sales and purchase invoices and payroll changes. Each quarter you receive a short summary of what was filed, what was paid, what is coming up and any issues we noticed, so you always know where your UK obligations stand without having to track them yourself.

Compliance draws together our corporation tax, VAT, payroll and Self Assessment services. For planning, see UK tax planning and advisory.

We would rather file early and wait than file late and pay. Every UK deadline goes into one calendar from day one.
