Business returns

When the business and the owner are the same, the return has to tell both stories

For sole proprietors and professionals, business income sits inside an individual return, next to personal income and a wealth statement. For partnerships and other AOPs, the firm files its own return and each partner reports their share. Either way, business and personal figures have to reconcile.

Under section 118 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, returns for individuals and AOPs are due by 30 September for the tax year ending 30 June. A business return starts from the business's accounts: income, admissible expenses, tax depreciation on business assets and any minimum tax that applies under the law. Tax withheld by customers, banks and utility companies is then claimed against the liability, and advance tax is reconciled.

For an individual, the business's assets, liabilities and drawings must agree with the wealth statement under section 116. For an AOP, the firm's return and the partners' returns must report the same profit shares. We prepare the business side and the personal side together, using records from our bookkeeping service or your own, and coordinate with our individual tax return and AOP registration services.

The most common gap we find in business returns is between the business's cash and the owner's wealth statement. We close it before FBR sees it.

Risks we prevent

Where business returns usually go wrong

These are the issues we see most often for sole traders and firms.

01

No accounts behind the return

Returns based on estimates rather than records are hard to defend under section 122.

We prepare proper accounts.
02

Wealth that does not reconcile

Business cash and assets that disagree with the wealth statement invite questions.

We reconcile both sides.
03

Credits left unclaimed

Tax deducted by customers and banks is often not fully claimed.

We match credits to FBR data.
04

Partners' shares inconsistent

Profit shares reported differently in the AOP and partners' returns cause notices.

We prepare both together.
05

Turnover mismatches

Turnover that differs from sales tax returns or bank deposits is easy for FBR to spot.

We reconcile turnover first.
06

Late filing

Missing the 30 September due date brings penalties and affects ATL status.

We file on time.

FAQs

Business tax return questions we hear most

Have a question that is not here? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.

When are business income tax returns due?
According to FBR's published due dates under section 118, returns for individuals and AOPs, including sole proprietors and partnership firms, are due by 30 September for the tax year ending 30 June, unless FBR extends the date.
How is a sole proprietor's business income taxed?
A sole proprietor's business income is part of their individual income and reported in their individual return, alongside other income and a wealth statement. Tax withheld by customers and banks is claimed against the liability.
Does a partnership file its own return?
Yes. A partnership firm is an association of persons and files its own return under its own NTN. Partners report their shares under the AOP rules in their individual returns, and the figures should agree.
Do I need accounts to file a business return?
You should have records that support your income and expenses. Proper accounts make the return accurate and defensible if FBR asks questions. Our bookkeeping service can keep them for you.
Can I claim business expenses?
Expenses incurred wholly and exclusively for the business are generally deductible, subject to the specific rules in the law. Personal expenses and some categories of payment are not. We review your expenses before filing.
Does minimum tax apply to my business?
Minimum tax provisions can apply to certain businesses depending on turnover and the type of person. We check whether any apply to you as part of the computation.
Why must my wealth statement match my business accounts?
Business cash, assets and drawings are part of your personal wealth. If they do not agree with your wealth statement, FBR may treat the difference as unexplained. We reconcile them every year.
How much does a business tax return cost?
Fees depend on the size of the business, the state of the records and whether accounts need preparing. Your first consultation is free and you receive a fixed quote before work starts.
