We register individuals, sole proprietors, AOPs, companies and foreign nationals with FBR on IRIS, add the right business details and take you through to your first return, so you become a filer, not just a registered name.

Registering with FBR

An NTN gets you into the system. Filing is what makes you a filer

Income tax registration under section 181 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 is the starting point for every taxpayer in Pakistan. It is completed online through e-enrolment on FBR's IRIS portal, which gives you a registration number and the password you use to file returns.

For individuals, the 13-digit CNIC is used as the NTN. AOPs and companies receive a 7-digit NTN once e-enrolment is complete. Sole proprietors and professionals should also add their business name, address and activity, because those details flow into sales tax registration, withholding and the way FBR reads your returns later.

Registration on its own does not make you a filer. You join the Active Taxpayers List only after you file an income tax return, and keeping your registration details up to date matters because FBR sends notices to the address, email and mobile number on record. That is why we register you and plan your first income tax return at the same time, and add sales tax registration where your business needs it.

We regularly meet people who registered years ago, never filed and assumed they were filers. Registration and filing go together.

Risks we prevent

Where income tax registration usually goes wrong

These mistakes are easy to make on IRIS and slow to undo.

01

Registered as an individual only

Business owners who never add business details end up with returns and withholding that do not match how they trade.

We register your business correctly.
02

Lost access to IRIS

Registering with a mobile number or email you do not control locks you out of your own tax account.

We set up access you keep.
03

Registered but never filed

An NTN without a return keeps you off the Active Taxpayers List and can bring a section 114(4) notice.

We file your first return too.
04

Out-of-date details

Notices sent to an old address or email still count as served, and deadlines can pass unnoticed.

We keep your profile current.
05

AOPs without proper documents

Partnerships registered without a clear partnership deed create disputes over each partner's tax.

We document the firm first.
06

Wrong business activity

An incorrect activity code can change withholding and sales tax obligations later.

We classify your activity carefully.

FAQs

Income tax registration questions we hear most

Have a question that is not here? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.

What is an NTN?
An NTN, or National Tax Number, is your registration number with FBR for income tax. For individuals, FBR uses the 13-digit CNIC as the NTN. AOPs and companies receive a separate 7-digit NTN when they complete e-enrolment on IRIS. You need it to file returns and for many business and banking transactions.
Is my CNIC my NTN?
For individuals, yes. Once you complete e-enrolment on FBR's IRIS portal, your 13-digit CNIC serves as your NTN or registration number. You still need to complete the e-enrolment itself and file returns to become a filer.
Does registering for an NTN make me a filer?
No. Registration gives you access to IRIS, but you appear on the Active Taxpayers List only after you file an income tax return. Many people register and never file, and so never get the lower withholding rates that filers enjoy. We usually file your first return straight after registration.
What do I need to register for income tax?
Individuals generally need their CNIC and a mobile number and email address they control, for verification. Sole proprietors add business details such as name, address and activity. AOPs need their partnership deed and partners' details, and companies need their SECP incorporation documents. We send a checklist for your situation.
Can overseas Pakistanis register for an NTN?
Yes. Overseas Pakistanis can register on IRIS using their CNIC or NICOP, and we can complete the process with you remotely. Registration is often the first step to filing a return for Pakistan-source income and lowering withholding on property and banking transactions.
How does a new company get its NTN?
A company's tax registration follows its SECP incorporation, and SECP and FBR processes are linked so that new companies are registered for income tax as part of setup. We confirm the NTN, set up the principal officer's access and complete the company's profile on IRIS. See our company registration service.
Do I need to update my registration when my details change?
Yes. If your address, business activity, bank accounts or contact details change, your IRIS profile should be updated. FBR sends notices to the details on record, so outdated information can mean missed deadlines.
How much does income tax registration cost?
Registration is a fixed professional fee that depends on whether you are an individual, a business, an AOP or a company. Your first consultation is free, and you receive a quote before work starts. Many clients combine registration with their first return.
